An Interview With Dr. Doug Brossoit , A Qualified Dentist In Spokane

1. What is periodontal (gum) disease?

If we define "cure" as something that needs one treatment and then it never returns, then based on this definition, then no, it' s not curable. However, once it has been diagnosed it can be treated and managed very well in most cases. The less severe it is when it is first diagnosed and treated, the more easily it can be controlled and the less damage it will cause over time.

2. What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is the first and least serious stage of periodontal disease. It appears as red swollen gums (gingiva).

3. What is the cause of gum disease?

It is caused by the plaque that builds up on our teeth and gums every 24 hours. This plaque is full of germs (bacteria and other micro-organisms) that attack the tissue and that is why it has to be brushed and flossed away every day to prevent its occurrence.

4. What happens if gum disease is not treated?

If left untreated, the spread of the infection migrates down the tooth below the gums towards the bone. The germs now begin to transition to higher numbers of different kinds of bacteria that eat away the gums and bone supporting the teeth. To make matters worse, this whole process can happen without someone knowing it is going on because until it gets into the advanced stages, it is pretty much painless.

5. Once I have had periodontal disease, can I get it again?

Yes, once it has been diagnosed, it has to managed by your hygienist, dentist, or periodontist for a lifetime. That' s why regular checkups and cleanings are important.
