Gingivitis is a swelling of the gums typically caused by bacterial plaque.
3. What is the cause of gum disease?
The causes of gum disease are bacteria and genetics.
4. What happens if gum disease is not treated?
If gum disease is not treated it will get infected. The gum and supporting bone can deteriorate and teeth can become loose as the support breaks down. Also, when the gums bleed, bacteria in the mouth contacts the blood and gains access to the circulatory system.
5. Once I have had periodontal disease, can I get it again?
Yes, you can get periodontal disease again, if you had the disease once.
