What is periodontal (gum) disease?
Gum disease is a painless infection that is caused by the bacteria that live in the mouth. The bacteria create a sticky film called dental plaque. Plaque forms constantly on the teeth, and if it is not cleaned away properly on a daily basis, it turns toxic and creates an infection that eventually leads to gum disease. Gum disease spreads from the gum to the bone that provides support for the teeth. The disease then causes bone damage and loss of support to the teeth which eventually leads to the loss of teeth. The same bacteria and their by products that cause gum disease can enter the blood stream and cause problems such as heart disease and stroke. Gum disease is preventable with proper brushing and getting frequent professional cleanings. Gum disease can be effectively treated by periodontists - dental specialists who have advanced training to treat periodontal infections.
