What is periodontal (gum) disease?
A serious bacterial infection of the gums that can destroy the bone that holds the teeth in your jaw. It is caused by the plaque that forms on your teeth everyday.
How is periodontal disease treated?
Much like diabetes, there is no cure, but the goal is to teach you to control it along with the dentist s help. To start out with, it is treated by scaling and root planing which removes the deposits and diseased tissue so a healthier environment is created so the gums can heal as much as possible. What you do at home to take care of your teeth and gums is the most critical part and you should receive instruction and tools to help you do this. Your dentist may prescribe antibacterial agents, such as mouthrinses or localized medications, to help in the healing. If deep pockets persist, you may be referred to a periodontist,a gum specialist, for surgery to reduce the depth and facilitate cleaning.
What is the cause of gum disease?
Plaque, which is the soft, sticky substance that forms on your teeth everyday. It is made up of bacteria, saliva, and food, so it is critical that it be removed daily, especially at before going to sleep.
Why should I worry about gum disease?
Gum disease has been linked to other health problems in the body, such as heart disease,strokes,diabetes,pulmonary disease, and even premature and underweight babies.
What are the signs of periodontal (gum) disease?
Often the signs are subtle and have occurred slowly over time so that you may not even realize they aren't normal. Signs may include: reddened and/or swollen gums, bad breath, shifting or loose teeth, bleeding or tenderness especially with flossing.
How is periodontal disease detected?
The severity is detected by examination and measurements of gum recession,looseness of the teeth, and by probing or measuring the depth of the pocket or well around the teeth
What is gingivitis?
This is the first stage of gum disease that affects only the gums. It is reversible at this point.
